Rugged Cameras – Built to Withstand the Outdoors

These cameras are
made to last, and ready to hit the water, the trail, the sky, or the slope
right along with you! Also check out 40 of Cody Smith’s best photos taken with
the Panasonic DMC-TS3.

I’ve grown to
enjoy taking pictures more and more over the past four years my family and I
have been traveling full-time. Until the winter of 2012 I have never had my own
camera, but that all changed when I got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3. It’s
shockproof, waterproof, dustproof, and freezeproof – this is the perfect camera
for me, because I take it hiking, ATVing, camping, mountain biking, and
kayaking all the time. When it starts raining while out kayaking, no problem,
it’s waterproof so I can just keep clicking away. When I’m out in the mud,
dust, and dirt on my ATV, no problem, everything including the lens is
completely sealed so even sand (a photo lens’ arch enemy) can’t hurt it. When I
decide to head up into the mountains hiking in subzero temperatures, no
problem, it’s built to withstand that, too. I also purchased a couple SD cards
that are almost as tough as the camera, so my pictures are not only sealed
inside a durable camera housing, but also sealed inside a durable SD card. On
top of all that, it has a built in GPS that I use on almost every outing. It
gives altitude, heading, coordinates, basic weather readings, and can record
some of this information to each photo taken so that the exact location can be
looked up later. Google Earth makes it easy to create an account that will
allow you to upload the GPS tagged photos and create a “trail” of photography
wherever you’ve been. Since I got it , I’ve taken approximately 2,500
pictures of anything and everything from frozen waterfalls in Missouri’s Mark
Twain National Forest and beavers in Colorado’s Arkansas River, to the golden aspen
covered Wasatch Mountains in southern Utah (Check out my Flickr album below to
see some of my favorites).

Although I’ve only
discussed my camera by Panasonic, there are several other great companies that
make similar outdoor-proof cameras. If you enjoy camping, hiking, biking,
kayaking, rock climbing, caving, horseback riding, camping, hang gliding,
swimming, off-roading, or just about any other outdoor sport, I strongly
recommend getting one of these cameras. It will give you peace of mind while
out exploring – instead of worrying about keeping the camera safe from the
elements, you can focus on having fun and getting great photos at the same
time!
